Benfica have suspended institutional relations with Grupo Medialivre, owner of CMTV and Correio da Manhã, with immediate effect. The club said in a statement on Tuesday, 17 February, that this follows the publication of false information and that it will file a criminal complaint against both outlets and journalist Gustavo Lourenço.

The move comes as the Clube da Luz prepare to face Real Madrid. It rejected claims that any member assaulted or threatened a journalist, calling that entirely false.

Staff acted only out of a legitimate concern to protect players and coaching staff from repeated, insistent approaches by a CMTV reporter, carried out without respect for basic institutional norms, even in public spaces.

The club described the imputations as unfounded and damaging to the honour, good name and reputation of Benfica and its professionals.

The statement was published via the club’s official channels on Tuesday afternoon.
