According to Sky Sports Switzerland, Benfica have ended their move for Groningen captain Stije Resink this winter after the Dutch club held firm.

Initial rumours had indicated talks between the clubs, and fresh details have now emerged around the collapsed approach.

Led by president Rui Costa, Benfica chose to close negotiations when Groningen refused to part with the 22-year-old midfielder. José Mourinho was keen to add him.

A dispute arose during recent discussions, which left the deal off the table despite the player’s interest in a switch to the Estádio da Luz.

Benfica presented an offer of about €7 million, then accused Groningen of promoting the player for marketing off the Lisbon club’s interest without any intention to sell.

This season, Resink has played 21 competitive matches for Groningen, 20 in the Eredivisie and one in the cup, totalling 1,857 minutes with four goals and five assists.
