Bernardo Silva has revisited his Benfica academy years, saying some at Seixal doubted his potential because of his size as he prepares to close his chapter at Manchester City.
According to Glorioso 1904, the Portugal international recalled that he was not selected at times because people felt he was neither big nor strong enough, and he drew encouragement from a Barcelona side packed with technically gifted but slight players.
He added that 15 years ago he faced a difficult spell without game time at Benfica due to concerns over his stature, and that being the player with the most appearances in this City team now makes the moment especially meaningful.
Silva said Pep Guardiola was a long-standing reference point for him, particularly for trusting technically refined footballers regardless of physique. He cited Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Pedro Rodríguez as inspirations.
This season for Manchester City, Bernardo Silva, valued at 27 million euros, has played 52 matches, 37 in the Premier League, eight in the Champions League, three in the League Cup and four in the FA Cup. Across 3,795 minutes he has registered three goals and five assists.
