Coventry City have made a big announcement on their captaincy.
Coventry City have kicked off their 2025/26 Championship campaign with all guns blazing and have now appointed Matt Grimes as their new captain.
After coming within minutes of a penalty shoot-out which could’ve seen them secure a place in the play-off final last term, the Sky Blues have used that heartbreak to bounce back this season.
Frank Lampard’s side have eight points on the board after the first international break, having enjoyed handsome victories over Derby County (5-3) and QPR (7-1) thus far.
That's despite that fact that Coventry experienced a relatively quiet summer, making just three permanent signings. However, they managed to keep hold of important operators such as Milan van Ewijk and Bobby Thomas, which is a huge boost for the club’s promotion ambitions.
That isn’t to say that there weren’t departures from the CBS Arena. Most notably, former club captain Ben Sheaf made a move to Wrexham on deadline day for a reported fee of £6.5 million.
Sheaf had lost his place in Lampard’s starting 11, so his presence won’t be a massive blow on the pitch, but the time has now come for someone else to skipper the Sky Blues.
There were various avenues Lampard and Co. could’ve gone down when deciding who would be the new Coventry City captain.
Experience is always vital when assuming such an important role, which may have presented Jamie Allen as a potential candidate.
However, it’s hard to imagine the midfielder racking up too many appearances this term, so he never would’ve been a viable option. Instead, the Sky Blues’ boss has selected one of the club’s newest recruits to take on the mantle.
Matt Grimes joined Coventry in January after seven years with fellow Championship outfit Swansea and is now captain at the CBS Arena. The 30-year-old skippered the Swans for almost six years, so has the necessary experience to perform such a task.
Liam Kitching will assume vice-captain duties and has previously worn the Sky Blues’ armband on a number of occasions across the past couple of years when called upon.
Grimes’ quality as a footballer can’t be disputed. He has performed as one of the Championship’s best midfielders for a number of years.
His experience of leading a dressing room at this level makes him an obvious candidate for the club captaincy, but not all Coventry City fans are in agreement.
Some support the decision and believe that Lampard has made the right choice.
“Probably the right choice,” one fan wrote. “Imagine he’s been running it behind the scenes and on the pitch since he arrived anyway.”
“Brilliant decision,” said another. “Should of been done a long time ago.”
However, there were some less favourable views to contrast this positivity.
“Kitching robbed,” was a phrase repeated by multiple supporters, clearly feeling that their new vice-captain had been overlooked for the main role.
Some Swansea City fans also weighed in on the announcement, after previously experiencing Grimes’ captaincy.
“Swans fan here,” started the supporter. “He’ll play every game, train like a winner and set excellent standards in and around the club as a whole… but I’ll tell you something: if the chips are down in a game, don’t look to him for leadership. He’ll be the first head to drop.”
Overall, only time will tell if Grimes was the correct choice to take over as Coventry’s new captain, but one thing is for sure – it is certainly a decision that has split opinion.
