FLW looks at two of Chris Davies' players who could be impacted by Kwame Poku's potential move
Just days after facing off against Birmingham City twice in the space of a week, it has been revealed that Kwame Poku could be set for a move to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.
Football Insider have reported that Blues have opened talks with the right-winger's representatives as they look to secure his services on a free transfer after turning down a club-record contract offer at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Chris Davies and his League One-winning squad are now all-too-aware of the problems the one-time Ghanaian international can cause defenders in the third-tier, having scored a powerful effort which rocketed past Ryan Allsop in their eventual promotion-clinching game on April 8th, before causing Alex Cochrane further problems at Wembley Stadium as Posh stunned the array of Bluenoses and recorded back-to-back victories in the EFL Trophy final.
Poku's numbers at Peterborough hardly make it a surprise that he is set to make the step-up back into the Championship this summer after prior interest from Luton Town, Burnley and Millwall over the course of recent months, having made just 20 appearances for Posh in the second tier during their relegation season of 2021/22.
Whilst a cut-price deal for the 23-year-old, as a result of him being under 24 at the start of the season, would represent a strong bargain for Davies and no doubt please the support in B9, Poku's arrival is bound to have strong implications on the immediate and long-term future of those he will be competing against for a starting spot, and here are two men who perhaps won't react to the news with the greatest deal of enthusiasm.
Scott Wright's 2024/25 campaign has been over since 23rd February, when the former Rangers man injured his right knee during the first half of the goalless draw with Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Davies later revealed that the timing of his return is likely to be towards the end of the calendar year, at a point where the 27-year-old could find himself down the pecking order as a result of Poku's signing, as well as the fact that versatile performers such as Keshi Anderson and Taylor Gardner-Hickman have the ability to feature on the right flank.
Wright only made three league starts for the club prior to his second injury of the campaign, with the other 10 coming as substitute cameos. As a result, the Scot only has four goal contributions to his name, with three of them coming in the 4-0 victory against Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy's group stage.
Willum Willumsson's first season at St Andrew's has been extremely mixed, and just under half of his appearances have seen him predominantly feature on the right side of midfield.
The Icelandic playmaker was signed from Go Ahead Eagles for a reported £3.5m fee, and initially started his career in B9 in fine fashion with eight goal contributions to his name in the league prior to the end of November, as well as a hat-trick of assists against Fulham's Under-21's in the EFL Trophy.
However, the 16-time international hasn't been able to reach the same standard of performance levels for quite some time now, despite the fact that Blues have motored to the League One title in impressive fashion, with Rangers loanee Kieran Dowell also having a relatively strong influence on proceedings in the meantime either out wide or through the middle.
If Dowell is to sign permanently in the summer as well as Poku, Davies may have a big decision to make in terms of Willumsson's future, with supporters growing more and more frustrated with an underwhelming collection of performances since the turn of the year, although he has three years remaining on his contract.
