Corinthians midfielder Breno Bidon has had his Italian citizenship recognised, improving his prospects in the European market as he would no longer occupy a non-EU slot.
"In price terms it makes no difference, but the options increase. Clubs usually keep non-EU places for match deciders, generally forwards, while they prefer to develop centre-backs or midfielders at home," said his agent, Fernando Brito, speaking to ge.globo.
Leagues in Spain, France and Italy restrict the number of foreign players, so his status is already viewed differently by clubs across the continent.
"The scenario changes completely from now. Before, Breno was competing for one of the three foreign slots at each European club. Now the possibilities are much greater."
The citizenship push has been years in the making and is common in football. Team-mate Yuri Alberto is also pursuing Italian paperwork and was in Italy earlier this year to advance the process.
Bidon has attracted interest from PSV, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona. The CIES Football Observatory values him at 19.3 million euros, and he is contracted until the end of 2029 with release clauses of 100 million euros abroad and R$ 370 million domestically.
He remains available for Corinthians and could play on Wednesday, 1 April, against Fluminense at the Maracanã at 21:30 in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
