Diego Gomez enjoyed a special evening as Brighton progressed to the Carabao Cup’s fourth round with a 6-0 win at Barnsley.

The midfielder scored four times in the rout of the League One side, including a first-half hat-trick and stunning strike from distance to seal the match ball.

Gomez, who also scored in the second round, has now netted five goals in 141 minutes of Carabao Cup action this season.

The Paraguay international has also become the first player to score four goals away from home in a League Cup match in 18 years.

The last player to achieve the feat was Julio Baptista, who scored four goals as Arsenal won 6-3 at Liverpool in the 2006/07 quarter-finals.

Gomez, who has started just once in the Premier League this season, has sent a message to Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler.
