The centre-back got her head on a Kosovare Asllani free-kick six minutes from time, her goal settling an incredibly tight contest in South Yorkshire.
When speaking to WSL Full-Time after the match, Brougham admitted that scoring the winning goal and collecting three points was an amazing feeling.
“I’m buzzing with the three points,” Brougham said. “Sheffield United made it really tough for us but I’m happy to have got the goal and got the win in the end.”
Brougham’s near-post header came just minutes after a similar move which saw teammate Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah denied by home keeper Sian Rogers. The defender said that she had identified space in-front of the Sheffield United defence.
She said “Me and Chaney [Boye-Hlorkah] had a conversation and I was like ‘this one, I’m going to go front post’. Kosovare [Asllani] put a great ball in, it fell to me and ended up in the back of the net.”
Despite there being a considerable difference in league ranking and investment, Sheffield United gave London City Lionesses a real scare. Brougham was not surprised by The Blades’ strong performance.
She said “The beauty of this league is that every game is difficult. You can’t underestimate the teams at the bottom of the league because anyone can beat anyone on the day.
“We had to be patient, play our game and thankfully, we got the win.”
London City Lionesses’ victory sets up an exciting top of the table clash against Birmingham City at Hayes Lane next weekend. Brougham says that The Pride will treat the contest like every other game.
She said “It’s massive but it’s early on in the season. Nothing will change this week, we will prepare as we always do. We will go into the game and play our way as we always do, nothing will change.
“It’s early on, so [the result] won’t define the season but obviously, we are at our home stadium and we will want to win.”
London City Lionesses’ next Barclays Women’s Championship fixture against Birmingham City kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday 10 November 2024.
