The Blades more than matched their opponents but were eventually beaten by an 84th-minute Georgia Brougham goal following a free-kick.
When speaking to WSL Full-Time after the match, Sheffield United boss Thompson said that he was pleased with how his side performed against a star-studded London City Lionesses team.
“Overall, I’m really pleased,” Thompson said. “To be honest, I was a little unhappy that we weren’t ahead at half-time because I thought that we made some really good moments on the counter-attack, forced them into mistakes and just didn’t execute the pass or the finish in and around the box.
“We countered their threats very well all game and I’m a bit gutted that it’s a set-piece goal late on that has cost us.”
Sheffield United goalkeeper Sian Rogers had an excellent game. She produced some important saves to keep the scores level until late in the game. Thompson was impressed with his side’s entire defensive unit.
He said “We always know when we come up against the top teams, we are going to have to defend well and we are going to need our goalkeeper. She’s done that, she’s a reliable pair of hands, she’s experienced at this level and knows the game. She’s got a fairly young back-line in-front of her but I thought that they were outstanding today as well, they’ve kept some serious talent quiet for the whole game.”
Sheffield United will now contest a huge game against bottom club Portsmouth next weekend. Thompson said that his side’s approach won’t change, they want to be successful in every game.
He said “Every game that we set ourselves up for, we set up to win. You saw our intentions of winning this game, we will do it in a different way next week.
“I am confident in every game that we can go and compete, that’s all we can do at the end of the day. The opposition varies from game-to-game but our process remains the same.”
Sheffield United’s next Barclays Women’s Championship fixture at Portsmouth kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday 10 November 2024.
