Portugal international was on target in Atlanta
Bruno Fernandes labelled Manchester United’s performance as “lazy” after the Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton in Atlanta, Georgia.
United were playing their final game of the Premier League Summer Series at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Bryan Mbeumo made his long-awaited debut alongside fellow new signing Matheus Cunha, as both performed well in their first outing together.
Fernandes, operating further forward as one of the two No10s in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, opened the scoring for United from the spot after Amad Diallo had been fouled by James Tarkowski.
Iliman Ndiaye equalised with a neat finish before Mason Mount curled in a stunner to put United back in front, but a scuffle between Ndiaye and Fernandes distracted those in red as Everton broke away, and a cut-back ricocheted into Altay Bayindir’s net off the unfortunate Ayden Heaven and Diallo.
Amorim’s side fly back home unbeaten from their US tour, having beaten West Ham and Bournemouth before Sunday’s draw, and they lifted the Summer Series trophy despite only sharing the spoils with the Toffees.
However, Fernandes criticised his side’s display and called on the club’s hierarchy to get moving in the transfer market once more.
"It's been positive to be together to create a bond between the players," Fernandes told Sky Sports.
"It's been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too.
"We didn't want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn't the best and we were a little bit lazy today.
"We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment."
United have brought in three signings this summer: Cunha, Mbeumo, and Diego Leon, the left wing-back.
They are also pursuing Benjamin Sesko in their quest to land a centre-forward.
“It was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here,” Fernandes continued. “More quality to get everyone to step up a little bit more, and I think that is what the club are trying to do.
"Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that."
