The Brazilian did travel with the squad for the final league phase match against Paris Saint-Germain but was not risked off the bench.

Guimaraes, the Newcastle captain, has established himself as one of the most impressive midfielders in the Premier League, and this season has scored eight goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

In his absence against PSG, Jacob Ramsey partnered Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park, helping the visitors claim a credible 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe revealed the latest on his captain.

“Slightly unknown at the moment. I’d say he did really well to be with us in Paris - I think that is more down to him being desperate to be there and support the players,” Howe revealed.

“We did very, very light training and he participated in that, but it was next to nothing to be honest.

“He trained with us yesterday [Thursday] but that was more of a [fitness] test.

“We’ll see how he is today. This will be the day where we really decide.”

Remarkably, Newcastle have not won a Premier League game without Guimaraes in the starting lineup since he made his full debut nearly four years ago.

In addition, the Magpies tend to struggle away at Liverpool, last winning at Anfield in 1995.
