Matchday 10 in the Bundesliga saw Bayern Munich drop points for the first time this season, a managerial sacking, five-goal thrillers, last-minute equalisers, and a Rhine derby which had three penalties. Here is your review of matchday 10 in the best league in the world… probably.

Bayern Drop Points

For the first time this season in all competitions, Bayern Munich have dropped points. Vincent Kompany’s side had to settle for a draw when they came across Union Berlin in the capital on Saturday afternoon, and in truth, they were lucky they didn’t lose.

Union striker Ilyas Ansah headed home the supposed 1-0 in the 9th minute off a Leopold Querfeld corner. After a lengthy VAR review, however, the goal was disallowed due to Ansah being ruled marginally offside. The word “marginally” remains especially important in this case. The “naked eye” couldn’t discern the five millimetres or so Ansah was ahead of his marker.

“The first goal is a goal.“To chalk it off for being five millimetres offside, someone has been huffing paint. I’ll draw that line 27 times for you.”

Despite the early misfortune, Union took the lead via Danilho Doekhi 20 minutes later. Luis Diaz got Bayern back on level terms before halftime, before Doekhi scored his second for what looked to be the winner seven minutes from time.

Bayern remain top and six points clear of RB Leipzig in second.

Derby Delight for Die Fohlen

Going into the game, FC Koln would have fancied their chances after the start to the season they’ve made. However, it was Gladbach who were on the ascendancy for much of the first half.

As the game ticked towards half-time, die Fohlen won a penalty after a foul from Kristoffer Lund on Franck Honorat. However, Haris Tabakovic’s sport kick was saved by Köln keeper Marvin Schwäbe, pushing the ball out for a corner.

From the resultant corner, Gladbach opened the scoring when ping ponging in the air allowed the ball to land at the feet of Philipp Sander, whose volley made it 1-0. From agony to ecstasy in the space of a minute, Galdbach never truly looked back from that moment on.

The hosts were awarded another penalty when Lund handled the ball in the box, and Kevin Diks was able to beat Schwäbe to make it 2-0. Then, die Fohlen hit their rivals with another goal just three minutes later when a counterattack was finished off by Tabakovic. Koln pulled one back late on via the penalty spot themselves, however, it was too late for any sort of comeback.

Wolfsburg Sack Paul Simonis

On Friday night, Wolfsburg succumbed to two late Werder Bremen goals to lose 2-1 on the bank of the Weser.

The defeat left Wolves in 14th and now just three points from bottom place FC Heidenheim. Following a string of bad results, Wolfsburg announced the sacking of head coach Paul Simonis.

On Sunday evening, the club confirmed that Wolfsburg U19 head coach Daniel Bauer will assume control of the team for now. Bauer has already coached the German Wolves on an interim basis, working the touchline in the final two league fixtures last season after Ralph Hasenhüttl’s released.

Managing director Peter Christiansen noted: “The decision to release Paul Simonis was not an easy one for us. We greatly appreciated his work, his ideas, and his interaction with the team. This step is personally painful for me. We all bear responsibility for the current situation: the sporting management, the coaching team, the players, and the entire club.”

Wolfsburg now have the international break to begin their search for a new head coach. When Bundesliga action returns on the weekend of the 21st November, Wolves play host to Bayer Leverkusen

Around The Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Hamburger SV scored a 97th-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund. HSV were good value for their point, whilst BVB only registered one shot on target all game.

TSG Hoffenheim continue to impress after their 3-1 win against RB Leipzig. TSG move up to 6th and have won more points from losing positions than any other team in the Bundesliga so far this season.

Bayer Leverkusen ran out 6-0 winners at home to Heidenheim. 5-0 up at halftime, you’d feel for any fans that were late arriving at the BayArena on Saturday. Leverkusen looking solid, Heidenheim will more than likely be relegated this season.

In the other games, there were wins for SC Freiburg (2-1 vs St. Pauli), VfB Stuttgart (3-2 vs FC Augsburg), and Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0 vs Mainz 05).
