Bayern Munich restored a six-point lead, Albert Riera won on his Eintracht Frankfurt debut, and Bayer Leverkusen found rhythm.
Get German Football News highlights three takeaways from Matchday 22. Werder started brightly, but a Harry Kane penalty made it 1-0, the striker struck again three minutes later, and Leon Goretzka added a second-half third as Bayern responded to Dortmund’s earlier win.
Dortmund face Leipzig then Bayern, plus Atalanta in the Champions League, while Vincent Kompany’s side host Frankfurt before visiting Signal Iduna Park.
Frankfurt delivered under Riera in a more pragmatic display. Nathanial Brown, Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab and Ansgar Knauff sealed a 3-0 and a first Bundesliga clean sheet since a 1-0 over Augsburg in early December. Gladbach had three shots on target from 20 and have one win in nine, sitting three points above the relegation zone.
Leverkusen had stuttered after the break despite a four-match unbeaten run. A 4-0 over relegation-fighting St. Pauli briefly lifted them into the Champions League spots, with goals from Jarell Quansah, Patrick Schick, Edmond Tapsoba and Ernest Poku. Die Werkself meet Olympiakos in midweek after losing to them weeks ago, but recent form should offer hope it was a blip.
Elsewhere, Hamburg beat Union Berlin 3-2 to move into ninth, while Hoffenheim beat Freiburg 3-0 to stay in the top four.
