Can Liverpool Be Stopped After Transfer Spree?

Liverpool spent an amazing €482.90m during the summer transfer window. One of the most enduring transfer sagas in recent memory ended with Alexander Isak joining for €145m. They’ve improved on an already impressive squad. After Liverpool’s Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season, is there any hope for the chasing pack?

Is Liverpool’s squad complete?

Despite the departures of Luis Díaz (€70m) and Darwin Núñez (€53m), and the tragic death of Diego Jota, Liverpool’s attack looks formidable. They have Florian Wirtz (signed for €140m), Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Isak, and Hugo Ekitiké (€95m) competing for the forward positions. 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha made the Champions League squad ahead of Federico Chiesa, who missed much of last season through injury.

It was largely the fees for Díaz, Núñez, Jarell Quansah, and Ben Doak – as well as the quiet summer 2024 window – that allowed Liverpool to spend so much. The club will meet the PSR rules even with the late addition of Isak, whose signing broke the British transfer record.

Wirtz’s arrival means Dominik Szoboszlai may be used more often in a deeper position, meaning he’ll have to compete with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenburch. Curtis Jones will also fight for a starting place, as will Stefan Bajcetic when he returns from a hamstring injury.

In defence, Giovanni Leoni (€18m) will compete with Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez to partner Virgil van Dijk. After many years of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson under Jürgen Klopp, new full-backs Jeremie Frimpong (€40m) and Milos Kerkez (€46.9m) will help Slot define his own team. Robertson may be hoping for one last season as the first-choice left-back.

Two-time Premier League Golden Glove winner Alisson will have to outperform Giorgi Mamardashvili to keep his place as the number 1 goalkeeper. Whatever Liverpool’s first eleven looks like by the end of the season, it will rarely have been as strong in the Premier League era; neither will their second eleven.

With this spree in mind, transfer spending has been a popular topic this summer, as some sites like MegaTipsList, which also act as guides on where to find accurate Irish football tips, recently looked back on the most expensive transfers in football history. One single transfer from Liverpool has changed so much, and few had them down as the team that would carry out such a spend. The challengers

Arsenal were Liverpool’s closest rivals last season. Their fans cried out for a new striker after Mikel Merino was used as a makeshift number 9 last season. Viktor Gyökeres joined for €65.8m, and if he can get anywhere close to his Sporting CP goals-to-game ratio then fans will likely be happy. It’s not just Gyokeres who arrived: Arsenal’s defence, midfield, and attack all look stronger with Martín Zubimendi (€70m), Eberechi Eze (€69.3m), Noni Madueke (€56m), Christhian Mosquera (€15m), and Christian Nørgaard (€11.6m) and Kepa Arrizabalaga (€5.8m).

Pep Guardiola will be hoping to improve on last season’s third-place finish – just one of two times he has finished outside the top two as a manager. Tijjani Reijnders (€55m) was Manchester City’s biggest addition, and the midfielder finished his debut against Wolves with a goal and an assist. Most pundits predicted Liverpool would retain their Premier League crown. The current odds suggest the title race will be between Liverpool (2.4) and Arsenal (3), with Man City (8.5) only slightly more likely winners than Chelsea (9).
