Former Sunderland midfielder Carl Robinson is among the frontrunners for the vacant St Mirren job, according to the Scottish Sun.

The 49-year-old played 57 times for the Black Cats between 2004 and 2006, scoring five goals, and won 52 caps for Wales. He has not held a managerial post since leaving Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022, but is an assistant coach at MLS side Atlanta United and works in coach education with the Welsh FA.

St Mirren are seeking a new boss after Stephen Robinson left for Aberdeen earlier this month. It has been a difficult league campaign, with the Buddies 10th on 24 points from 30 games. Livingston are bottom with 15 points and a single win, so the chances of relegation look extremely slim.

There has been silverware, with St Mirren lifting the Scottish League Cup for only the second time in their history after a 3-1 win over Celtic at Hampden Park in December. Robinson is one of several names under consideration, alongside Neil Lennon, Simo Valakari, Gary Naismith, Mark Wilson and former Dundee coach Tony Docherty.

Before the Scottish Premiership split, St Mirren face Falkirk away, Aberdeen at home and Celtic away. They also meet Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 18th April. If appointed, Robinson could quickly find himself leading a side with plenty still at stake.
