Carlos Baleba could be United-bound earlier than anticipated

Manchester United’s need for a midfielder is painfully obvious for fans to see, given the options at hand for Ruben Amorim.

Casemiro is now 33, and he does not have the legs to play every week, especially in big away games. Manuel Ugarte’s drop-off in form has been a real shame.

On top of this, the head coach does not think Kobbie Mainoo has what it takes to operate in a defensive midfield role, which is why the Portuguese tactician had demanded INEOS sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer.

The Seagulls’ were expecting a British record fee, but the United co-owners opted to strengthen up front instead. And given the outlay, it was not possible to go after the Cameroonian before the window slammed shut.

However, that has not curbed the club’s enthusiasm to try and land the 21-year-old in 2026, with The Peoples Person even relaying that the 20-time English league champions are ready to splurge €150 million to land him.

Most people would think that means the Red Devils will try and land the former Lille midfielder next summer, but that might not be the case.

Carlos Baleba has attracted interest from plenty of other sides, and United do not want to wait that long and allow other teams into the race.

Which is why as per Theatre of Red, INEOS are prepared to go all out to land the midfield ace in January. The Old Trafford side had already seen first-hand the enthusiasm Baleba showed towards completing a deal in the summer.

And the report states that he has asked Brighton to accept a bid for him once the window reopens in January.

January bid in the pipeline

“Following extensive discussions with sources close to Carrington, who will remain anonymous to preserve relations, the Theatre of Red can confirm that United intends to submit a proposal in January to fend off rival suitors.

“The player has requested that Brighton accept any suitable bid and is eager to join Ruben Amorim’s group with or without European football, as he views the growing project as an ‘irresistible opportunity’.”

United officials are confident that they will eventually get their man, which will be music to Amorim’s ears.

But when is the real question, and one that could shape the future of Amorim’s tenure in Manchester.
