According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Villarreal’s 2026/27 rebuild includes the return of 2025/26 loanees, a process that will shape pre-season decisions for new head coach Iñigo Pérez.
The clearest case is Carlos Romero. The left-back excelled at Espanyol and comes back regarded as ready to assume an important role. Villarreal extended his deal before sending him back to Espanyol on a loan without a purchase option, underlining long-term faith.
With Alfonso Pedraza not renewed, Romero is seen as a key competitor to Sergi Cardona, strengthening a position the club already views as well covered.
Out wide, decisions are more open. Thiago Fernández and Ilias Akhomach will return from top-flight loans and must convince the new staff this summer. Thiago, signed from Vélez Sarsfield then loaned to Real Oviedo in winter, improved in the second half and offers dribbling and upside.
His obstacle could be the foreign player quota. The three slots are currently taken by Luiz Júnior, Tajon Buchanan and Alex Freeman, so all four would exceed the limit.
Ilias joined Rayo Vallecano after renewing until 2028 on a loan without a purchase option. An injury halted his run-in, costing him continuity and harming his Morocco chances, leaving him out of the World Cup.
Another name in the frame is Dani Requena. The Granada-born midfielder, on loan at Córdoba CF in LaLiga Hypermotion, is part of the club’s plan to rejuvenate the squad and boost the Cantera Grogueta. His place will depend on midfield shape, outgoings and staff assessment of readiness.
