Celtic Eye Patrick Bamford as Transfer Window Closes

Celtic’s search for reinforcements in attack has led them to former Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford, according to Herald Scotland. With Adam Idah departing to Swansea on deadline day and late moves for Kasper Dolberg and Kelechi Iheanacho collapsing, the Scottish champions are scrambling to bolster their forward options before the Europa League deadline.

Bamford Considered for Parkhead Move

The 31-year-old Bamford ended his seven-year spell at Leeds by mutual consent last week, leaving him available on a free transfer. “The 31-year-old helped the Elland Road to two Championship titles, scoring 60 goals in 205 appearances.” Despite this pedigree, injuries and form limited him to just 17 Championship appearances last season without a single start.

Daniel Farke was clear about Bamford’s future at Elland Road, stating last month that the forward “had no future at the club.” His career, however, is not without highlights. Bamford earned his sole England cap in September 2021 and has previously represented Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace.

Alternative Options Under Review

Celtic’s shortlist includes other free agents. “Restricted to free agents and out of contract forwards, Celtic are also interested in Nigerian international Emmanuel Dennis.” The 27-year-old left Nottingham Forest this summer and would add pace and directness in attack.

Celtic’s transfer frustrations extended beyond Dolberg and Iheanacho. A deal for Chelsea striker David Fofana collapsed, and while Sebastian Tounekti arrived in a £5 million move from Hammarby, other late deals for Burnley’s Manuel Benson and Birmingham-linked Yang Hyun-jun also fell through.

Europa League Deadline Pressure

With the registration cut-off looming at 11pm, Celtic must act decisively. As one club insider put it, “It remains to be seen whether any deal can be done in time for the Europa League deadline.” The urgency underscores the thin margin of error Celtic face if they are to compete strongly in Europe.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Excitement and concern are mixing among Celtic fans after these latest transfer developments. The prospect of signing Patrick Bamford divides opinion. Supporters remember the striker who once fired Leeds to the Premier League, but they also know he struggled last season, barely making an impact in 17 appearances. At 31, some fear he might not have the sharpness needed to lead the line in Glasgow.

The Emmanuel Dennis link is more encouraging. Fans see a player still in his prime with speed and unpredictability, someone who could unsettle defences in the SPFL and Europe. Yet Celtic’s repeated near-misses in the market have left some sceptical. Kasper Dolberg, David Fofana and Kelechi Iheanacho were all linked, but none arrived. That frustration is fuelling a sense of disappointment that the champions may be left scrambling when stronger planning could have avoided the problem.

Still, Bamford represents experience, and with the Europa League squad deadline fast approaching, some fans will accept almost any reinforcement. A proven goalscorer, even one seeking redemption, could be the difference between progress in Europe or another early exit. There is a cautious hope, but also a very real worry that Celtic are running out of time.
