Celtic have been handed a blow in the club’s pursuit of Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

Robertson is set to become a free agent when his contract at Anfield expires this summer, with the Scotland captain due to depart Liverpool after nine decorated seasons.

Celtic have been named as suitors for the 32-year-old, who is a lifelong supporter of the club and has previously discussed his desire to represent the Scottish side.

Tottenham Hotspur are frontrunners to sign Robertson, having seen a January deal fall through.

However, the North London side are battling against Premier League relegation and their pursuit of the player hinges on that outcome. Spurs sit 18th in the Premier League, two points from safety, with four games to go.

Relegation for Spurs would have put Celtic in a stronger position. However, the Daily Record are reporting that rival interest has emerged from Atletico Madrid.

The Daily Record report that the Spanish side are keen on a deal to sign Robertson, which could scupper Celtic’s chances. Robertson’s preference is for his future to be determined before he leads Scotland at this summer’s World Cup.

Robertson past comments hint at Celtic transfer desire

Speaking in 2022, Robertson told BT Sport’s Currie Club Podcast that he frequently considers playing for Celtic.

“Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it. When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park, as a fan you always have that dream.

“Ideally I want to finish my career here at Liverpool. If I can stay at the top of my game, at the top of the tree my whole career, that’s the route I want to go down.

“But also, when I look at Celtic and when I was growing up, I was thinking I wanted to give them my best years. When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving my best years to Celtic.

“And now I don’t want to go as a 34 or 35-year-old old guy that my uncles start hating on me because I can’t move any more! Time will tell. I’m very much a person who lives in the moment.

“I don’t look too far ahead and I don’t often look back. There will be a time for that.”
