Chelsea have been targeting new first team player “for a while” but have waited too long already

Former Man U scout Mick Brown is always good for a quote, and his take on the Chelsea goalkeeping situation is worth reading. He claims that the Blues are already pushing hard to sign a new stopper.

“A new goalkeeper is something Chelsea have been looking at for a while,” he said in quotes picked up by Football Insider.
“They’ve identified that as an area of their team where they feel they can improve, and I think it’s something they have to do if they want to be title contenders. [Robert] Sanchez is a good goalkeeper, but he’s not an elite one, and he’s showed that this season.
“There have been a few errors this season, not least the one against Man United, and that’s something you can’t afford if you want to win major silverware. So it’s going to be a position Chelsea look to strengthen, and I hear they already have scouts assessing a number of potential replacements for him.
“I think that’s a move they’re going to step up either in January or at the end of the season, because we know they’re not afraid to spend money.”
If it was that simple, Chelsea would have bought a new goalkeeper last summer. Or the summer before. They are, in fact “afraid to spend money,” in certain ways. They were deep in talks with Mike Maignan but ended up not signing him, in part because the costs grew so much.
It’s one of the logical inconsistencies that has frustrated us most about this sporting project – they’re happier to spend £20m on Deivid Washington or Omari Kellyman than they are to buy a first class goalkeeper who would instantly upgrade the team’s prospects.
