Chelsea have the upper hand in a brief competitive history with Ajax, the clubs meeting only three times to date.
AjaxDaily points out that this is not a traditional European grudge, the sides rarely crossing paths as their peaks seldom aligned.
With Champions League entry no longer limited to domestic winners, Chelsea finished third in 2018-2019 and visited the Johan Cruyff ArenA in October 2019 for the first competitive meeting. Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to snatch a 1-0 win.
A fortnight later, Frank Lampard faced Erik Ten Hag in a thriller that ended 4-4. Ajax, semi-finalists the previous season, then dropped into the Europa League, missing the knockouts by one point to Chelsea.
Chelsea were subsequently beaten 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich, who lifted the trophy that season.
The third meeting arrived in October 2025 under the new Swiss system of the Champions League, Chelsea winning 5-1.
