Chelsea insider outlines what would get Maresca sacked ahead of “really big week”

Football journalist Ben Jacobs was giving his take on the Enzo Maresca situation on Sky Sports last night.

He insisted that the Blues boss is not going to be sacked for bad results – he just has to deliver the top 4 at a minimum. If he’s sacked, it will be at the end of the season, not midway through.

“Enzo Maresca is not under pressure for his job, but still has that seasonal pressure of getting top 4 and trying to win trophies… the Club World Cup victory, we don’t know the impact on the season… add to that the fact that Cole Palmer is out at the moment with a groin injury.

Chelsea have lost 5 games in the last 6 months, four of them they have been a player down. So red cards are a factor too. Chelsea are not pressing the panic button… nobody at Chelsea is getting jittery. He’s safe, but it’s a really big week for Chelsea.”

Jacobs doubles down on club briefings

Enzo Maresca answers awkward questions about Jose Mourinho.

We didn’t expect much else – Jacobs gets his information from the club, like all the other well connected Chelsea writers. And right now the club’s output says just one thing – nothing to see here.

The proof will be in the pudding, however. Managers are always being backed, right up until they’re not. But don’t expect Jacobs or any of the other guys who get briefed by the club – to report anything other than “strong and stable” right until the day he’s going.

Board to back Maresca after year of success

There’s also no reason to doubt what we’re hearing from these guys right now. We genuinely believe that Chelsea don’t want to sack Maresca, that they do believe in him and appreciate his work so far. It will take more than a wobble in September to change that.

Chelsea fans who want him gone will have to be very patient.
