Chelsea made Champions League history on Wednesday, becoming the first team to field three teenage goalscorers in a single match as they ran riot against a woeful Ajax side.
Marc Guiu, Estevao Willian and Tyrique George all found the net in a 5-1 thrashing at Stamford Bridge, with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez also on the scoresheet.
The game turned on its head just 18 minutes in when Ajax captain Kenneth Taylor was sent off for a reckless challenge. Almost immediately, 19-year-old Guiu raced on to Wesley Fofana’s header to open the scoring, briefly becoming Chelsea’s youngest Champions League scorer.
Caicedo added a second shortly after with a long-range strike that deflected past Remko Pasveer, before Wout Weghorst pulled one back from the penalty spot.
Chaos reigned before half-time, with Chelsea awarded two more penalties. Fernandez calmly converted the first, while 18-year-old Estevao Willian scored the second to make it 4-1 at the break. Three minutes into the second half, substitute Tyrique George tapped in from close range to become the third teenager on the scoresheet, wrapping up the emphatic win.
It was also a night for young talent beyond the goals: 17-year-old Reggie Walsh became the youngest player to feature for Chelsea in the Champions League, and the Blues’ dominance allowed manager Enzo Maresca to make all five substitutions by the 65th minute, giving valuable minutes to his squad players.
Ajax were well off the pace, and the result leaves them bottom of their group with three defeats from three. Meanwhile, Chelsea have now won back-to-back European fixtures after an opening-day loss to Bayern Munich and remain in contention for a top-eight finish in the group.
