Blues go out of Carabao Cup with a whimper after failing to break down stubborn Arsenal defence

Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage as a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium sent Arsenal to the final instead, 4-2 on aggregate.

Despite defending resolutely, the visitors did not create much of their own.

Enzo Fernandez squandered their best chances from range late on, before Kai Havertz scored with the game stretched in its final minute to consign defeat on Chelsea for the second time in three weeks and dump the Blues out.

Dom Smith was at the Emirates Stadium to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…

Robert Sanchez 5

One save to make in the first half but otherwise his role consisted of claiming crosses and distributing. Such are the perils of cup football, was left with no defenders to help him out as Havertz rounded him for the late winner.

Wesley Fofana 7

Had a very good game at centre-back, using his recovery pace to good effect when he needed to.

Trevoh Chalobah 7

Did well in the air and on the ball, except for one or two passes which were weighted slightly wrongly. Then made a fantastic slide challenge to deny Gabriel Martinelli a shot on goal.

Jorrel Hato 6

Stuck to the challenge of monitoring Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres as Chelsea’s left-sided of a back three before being replaced in favour of Estevao.

Malo Gusto 5

Did not offer much of an attacking threat and when he inverted into midfield, was not all that noticeable. Booked for a dive for feigning a foul from Piero Hincapie.

Enzo Fernandez 7

Had a significant impact on Chelsea’s positive showing at the Emirates, where he was diligent off the ball and precise on it. Had one good chance which Kepa Arrizabalaga parried, and then misfired twice from range as Chelsea searched for a goal to force extra time - which never arrived.

Moises Caicedo 7

It’s been a while since Caicedo was tearing his way round the pitch intercepting the opposition as effectively as this.

Andrey Santos 6

Didn’t do anything remarkable but was very brave on the ball and calm under pressure in an intense midfield battle.

Marc Cucurella 6

Made a crucial block late on to deny Gabriel a certain goal. Showed good footwork to evade a challenge on another occasion. Did well.

Joao Pedro 6

Used his wily physique and close ball control to wriggle free of Arsenal defenders in tight areas and hold the ball up well.

Liam Delap 5

Was used effectively as a right winger, tasked with running in behind and holding the ball up. Did better at the former task than the latter, before being substituted on the hour mark.

Subs:

Estevao (Hato, 60’) 5

Full of running when he came on but sometimes down a blind alley. Booked.

Cole Palmer (Delap, 60’) 6

Did make an impact in the half-hour he was on, playing a couple of line-breaking passes and pressing Arsenal’s back-line.

Alejandro Garnacho (Santos, 75’) N/A

Josh Acheampong (Gusto, 87’) N/A

Not used: Sharman-Lowe, Badiashile, Holland, Guiu, Mheuka
