Chelsea have dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior days before Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley.

The club said in a statement on Wednesday evening that under-21s boss Calum McFarlane will take charge as interim head coach until the end of the season, supported by existing backroom staff.

Chelsea travelled to Brighton on Tuesday on the back of four straight Premier League defeats without scoring. A 3-0 reverse at the Amex extended that run to five league games without a goal, the first time since 1912.

Rosenior and his staff were thanked for their efforts, with his integrity and professionalism highlighted since his mid-season appointment. The decision was difficult, though results and performances had fallen below required standards.

Chelsea are aiming for European qualification and further FA Cup progress this season, and will review the head coach role to make the right long-term appointment.
