QPR rejected deadline day interest in Kieran Morgan from Luton Town in order to hold onto the midfielder.

According to journalist Ian McCullough, the Hatters had an interest in the 19-year-old later in the January transfer window, which closed last Monday.

The midfielder has come through the ranks of the Hoops’ academy system, but has found game time tougher to come by this season.

He made 30 appearances in the Championship in the previous campaign, but he has so far played just 14 times under Julien Stéphan.

The teenager was a starter on 19 occasions in 2024/25, but has so far been in the first XI just five times this term, leading to speculation surrounding a potential loan exit.

Kieran Morgan loan move is needed

When asked if Morgan should’ve been loaned out, FLW’s QPR fan pundit Louis Moir claimed that it is a tricky situation and that a temporary exit this month might not have made the most sense due to the limited numbers in the squad.

However, he feels that a loan move in the summer window is the right next step in his career, as he needs consistent game time elsewhere to show he is capable of playing at the level needed at Loftus Road.

“It’s a bit of a tricky situation with Kieran Morgan because he’s hardly played, really, bar a couple of starts here and there, coming on,” Moir told Football League World.

“I’ve not been overly impressed, I think he’s been quite disappointing.

“Look, he’s still a young player and I think playing is only going to help, and he’s not had that consistency this season of playing, so that might have affected his performances.

“But — I’m not going to call him overrated yet because I think that’s quite harsh, still so young — I just don’t think he’s lived up to the hype around him last season.

“And if he was good enough, he should really be in the team a lot more than what he is.

“And then you think if you send him out on loan, it’s probably ideal, but there’s no sign of us bringing anyone in, midfield-wise, and if Field goes you’re looking very light if Morgan goes as well.

“I think he’ll probably feature a bit more maybe towards the end of the season, and then might just have to see what happens at the start of next season because I think a loan is beneficial to him.”

Moir has suggested that Morgan takes the step down to League One next season, and that his position in the squad can be evaluated after that, as the midfielder is still so young.

“Say he did have a loan to League One, I think that’d be perfect really because, like I say, he is still so young,” he continued.

“But I think, at this point of the season, with the midfielders we currently have, I think it was probably sensible to keep him at the club.

“And look, he’s 19, clearly talented, but I think the moral of the story is he needs a full loan next season, come back be 20, 21-years-old.

“He could still be a top player, I just think I’ve not been too impressed this season when he has played, but it’s way too early to decide whether he’s good enough or not for us.

“Because I think a loan will determine that, and I think it’s all about looking ahead to next season now for him.”

QPR are currently 11th in the Championship table, just four points adrift of the play-off places with 16 games still to play.

Kieran Morgan has time on his side

Morgan played an exceptional amount of minutes last season when he was 18-years-old, so it’s not a huge problem that he’s gone back down the pecking order at his age.

He is still only 19, turning 20 in March, so he has time on his side to prove that he can be a key figure for QPR.

A loan to League One to get consistent game time would be a smart move for next season if he doesn’t develop any further between now and then.

It’s clear that Stéphan doesn’t quite have a use for him at the moment, but the lack of midfield numbers means keeping him on deadline day made sense, as they had no time to find any replacements.
