Ryan Mason is under pressure to keep his job as West Brom manager
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
West Brom could be one of the next Championship clubs to make a managerial change.
The 2025/26 campaign hasn’t even finished its first third yet but a number of teams have already decided that they’ve seen enough from their managers and have taken appropriate measures to address the situation.
Sheffield United, Southampton and Watford have all already opted for a change in leadership, and West Brom may soon be the next side to join them.
Ryan Mason was appointed as the man to lead the Baggies forward this season with a goal of achieving play-off football once more, but his lack of experience has been evident thus far.
The 34-year-old’s current position is his maiden full-time first-team manager role, which means that he hasn’t previously dealt with the challenges controlling a Championship club brings.
West Brom have won just twice in their last 10 Championship outings, with six losses also included in that run.

After such a poor run of form, doubt has already started to creep into multiple sections of the Baggies’ fanbase that Mason might not be the manager to lead them back up the Championship table.
If results continue in a similar fashion, the Black Country outfit may have no choice but to relieve the young coach of his duties, which in turn brings forth another important decision.
With this in mind, Football League World’s West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, has named who he would like to see replace Mason in the scenario of his sacking.
“I'd like to see Michael Carrick be the one who takes over at Albion,” stated Callum. “I think that even though towards the end of his time at Middlesbrough it did go a bit stale and they probably reached a natural end of their time together, there are some good signs from his stint in Teesside.
“He wants an attacking style of play, possession-based. I think that his teams will score a lot of goals, but Albion will, of course, need to spend some money in January to make sure that the squad is suited to his style of play and to ensure that we are actually able to provide our next head coach with the possibility of being tactically flexible.
“I think that there are some glaring issues in our squad at the minute, the lack of an attacking right-back and a natural right-winger is what's standing out the most.
“But I think that if Albion were able to attract Carrick to the Hawthorns, I think that he'd be a really good option at Championship level. Despite the end of his time at Middlesbrough, I think there's a good Championship head coach there.”

West Brom need a manager with experience of taking a club from towards the bottom of the Championship into the play-off battle, which is something Carrick has.
When he joined Middlesbrough in 2022, the North East outfit were just outside of the relegation zone but after 46 matches, he managed to lead them to a fourth-place finish.
Although things never got better than that for Carrick at the Riverside, it’s exactly the type of performance that will appeal to West Brom. Although Mason may have lots of potential, he has nothing similar to Carrick on his CV.
Therefore, in the scenario that the Baggies do decide it is the right time for a change of boss, they would be hard-pressed to find a more suited candidate than Carrick.
