The Belgian Cup quarter-final between Charleroi and Club Bruges ended in chaos after a late flashpoint involving winger Shandre Campbell.

At the end of stoppage time, with Bruges trailing 0-2 away, Frenchman Jules Gaudin tugged Campbell’s shirt, prompting the South African to chase him, shove him and send him to the ground. According to L'Équipe, some Bruges fans who switched off early missed the extraordinary scenes.

A melee formed around Campbell, who ended up flat on his back before referee Erik Lambrechts produced a red card.

Team-mate Christos Tzolis, disputing the decision, then tried to grab the official’s forearm to prevent the dismissal. Tzolis and Gaudin were both booked.

Holders Club Bruges will not win the competition for the 13th time. Ivan Leko’s side are second in the Jupiler Pro League, one point behind Union Saint-Gilloise, and will host OM on 28 January in the eighth and final matchday of the Champions League league phase.
