Cole Palmer had a quiet game today against Aston Villa – but lit up the whole occasion with a superb strike to seal the game at 3-0.

He spoke to Sky Sports after the game with some thoughts on the game, his team’s place in the table, and his own form.

“Aston Villa are a good team so to win and go higher up the table is good. If we keep winning, I’m sure we’ll be near the top four. We’re just trying to keep going and win plenty of games,” Palmer said.

The attacking midfielder has had a quiet run in terms of goal contributions, at least by his own high standards, so will have been delighted to get back in the groove today. He gave all credit to his coach:

“I think if I go out and enjoy my football, the goals and assists will come. It’s all down to the manager, the desire that he puts into the sessions and what the players give to him.”

Palmer and Chelsea line up juicy run

Looking ahead at Chelsea’s fixtures, there’s a lot to like. This game today was supposed to be one of the tricker ones in this winter run, but Aston Villa’s collapsing form came at just the right time for us. A midweek trip to Southampton is followed by our huge derby game away at Spurs next weekend.

It will be interesting to see whether Palmer starts both of those games.

Then our Premier League run is Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Wolves… Palmer will be licking his lips. He won’t be short of goal contributions from those games, that’s for sure. And if the team keep playing like they are, we might even be thinking about more than just the top 4 come February.
