Sheffield United have completed the loan signing of Leo Hjelde from Sunderland for the remainder of the season, a move designed to restore rhythm and momentum to a campaign interrupted by injury. The 22 year old featured in last May’s Championship play off final victory, yet his current season stalled after Achilles surgery kept him sidelined through the opening months.
Hjelde’s comeback has been measured. He returned on November 20 with 45 minutes for Sunderland’s Under 21s against Sporting in the Premier League International Cup. Despite that milestone, the defender is yet to make a first team appearance this term, prompting a search for competitive minutes that suits both player and parent club.

Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman framed the decision with clarity. “Leo is motivated to play games, and we wanted to ensure his next opportunity matched his ambitions and our own. We know Sheffield United well and feel this can be a positive collaboration for all three parties.” The move reflects trust between clubs and a belief that regular football at Bramall Lane can accelerate Hjelde’s reintegration.
For Sheffield United, Hjelde adds defensive depth and Championship experience at a crucial stage of the season. For Sunderland, it is a pragmatic step in nurturing an asset under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2023.
