Barcelona may only have brought in two signings this summer, but both are registered on a temporary basis. The Blaugrana have leant on an emergency injury rule that allows clubs to use 80% of the salary of a long-term injured player, but it means that they will have to find the money to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor in the next four months, or risk losing them for the rest of the season.

This much was confirmed by La Liga President Javier Tebas and General Director Javier Gomez as they presented the salary limits for the 2024-25 season as of September. They noted that Olmo and Victor were only registered using the injuries of defenders Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen. Those players can still return to play before the January transfer window, but Olmo and Victor must then be registered by other means.

The danger for Barcelona is that players cannot be registered twice, hence if they cannot generate the sufficient space to register Olmo and Victor without the injury rule by January, then they would in theory be unable to play for the rest of the season.

Barcelona are in talks with sportswear brand Nike over a new sponsorship deal, which could provide them with that money. They are also working to bring in the money from the sales of shares in Barca Vision in 2022, the money for which they are still yet to receive. General Director Javier Gomez noted that the non-payment hit Barcelona’s salary limit by €70m, some of which they recovered through sales, but is still yet to be made up. In addition, at that point, they are only allowed to spend what they are bringing in anyway.
