Corinthians exec hails Supercopa win, contrasts with Fortaleza role

Throughout the afternoon of last Sunday (1), Corinthians faced Flamengo at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, in a match valid for the final of the Supercopa do Brasil, and ended up defeating the team from Rio by a score of 2-0. With this result, the Corinthians team won the competition for the second time in its history, the first being in January 1991, against the same opponent, at Morumbi.

The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by defender Gabriel Paulista and forward Yuri Alberto. After the match, football executive Marcelo Paz gave an exclusive interview to Central do Timão and celebrated the Supercopa victory, praising the players’ attitude in the triumph over the team from Rio, as well as Dorival Júnior’s coaching staff.

“An honor. It’s a joy, I’m very happy to witness this, I thank God for giving me this opportunity and President Osmar invited me to be at Corinthians, he’s the main reason I’m here. Congratulations to the players, who played incredibly well, they knew how to duel against a very good team like Flamengo. They understood what they had to do to neutralize Flamengo, to win the game, and we won the game. Deservedly, it could have been more, a disallowed goal, a controversial disallowed goal. Dorival is a strategist, a special coaching staff, the staff, so many people who help, who are competent, we are happy for all of this,” he began.

Next, he was asked about the differences between the work he is doing at Corinthians and what he previously did at Fortaleza. At the northeastern club, he was an executive between 2015 and 2025, holding various roles such as director, president, and CEO of the club’s SAF, being responsible for the institutional restructuring of the team, which, in recent years, began to participate in international tournaments and have consistent campaigns in the Brasileirão, despite being relegated at the end of last year.

The executive stated that the techniques for scouting players in the market are similar to what he did at Fortaleza, but the recruitment profile is a bit different, since Corinthians has more capacity to make investments – a larger budget.

“It’s different, right? They are different clubs, different structures. The recruitment work is similar, the recruitment technique, analyzing content, making contact with agents, discussing financial matters, seeing the coach’s needs. This process is similar. But at Corinthians, we work with a bigger budget, with players from a, let’s say, slightly higher shelf because of financial reasons, right? And that’s one of the differences in the work, but what I did at Fortaleza helped me and I’m very grateful for it, to be able to come here and do this job”, he continued.

Finally, he commented on his departure from the presidency of Futebol Forte União (FFU) – a position he had held since November 2023 – and of which Corinthians is one of the member clubs. Recently, Alexandre Barcellos, president of Internacional, was named to replace him. In his response, the executive gave an overview of his work at the former LFU.

“I fulfilled my role there, we managed to make the biggest sale in the history of Brazilian football broadcasting rights. We made access to sports broadcasting more democratic, because it was shown on open TV, Record, TV Globo, we sold international rights that had never entered Brazilian football before, Amazon, Google. So it’s huge. And we fought for a lot of money to go into the clubs as a result of these two sales. I leave with my commitment fulfilled, with a clear conscience about everything that was accomplished, and I will continue to help as much as possible, but no longer as president,” he concluded.
