Corinthians fan detained after alleged racism at Paulista Under-12 match

Throughout last Sunday, October 19, Corinthians faced Manthiqueira at the Dário Rodrigues Leite Stadium for the first leg of the São Paulo U-12 Championship quarter-finals and won with a score of 5-1. Despite the victory of Timãozinho, the match was interrupted in the final stretch by referee Guilherme Drbochlaw due to an alleged case of racism.

In the match report, the refereeing team reported that the game was halted after one of the Manthiqueira players fell to the ground crying after suffering racist acts from Corinthians fans present at the venue. “Black, son of a b*tch, without a family, go f*ck yourself!” were the shouts allegedly heard by the young player.

The athlete, in fact, did not return to the match due to being emotionally shaken, as also noted in the match report. A police report was also filed. Prior to the racism incident, the referee had already recorded, during the second half's technical stop, that Manthiqueira players had complained about inappropriate behavior from Corinthians fans.

In an interview with the page Filhos do Terrão, Manthiqueira coach Leonardo Cunacia provided some details about the incident: “We conceded the fifth goal and noticed our player on the ground crying. We didn't understand. We saw the Corinthians fans joking around. But then we didn't understand why he was on the ground crying. When we got there, he said, ‘the parents called me black.’ I didn't hear it, I was on the other side of the field. We are outraged. It's a 12-year-old child, I don't think he would lie about something so serious. I immediately went to the referee to see what measures could be taken. We tried to talk to the parents, who, united, said no one said anything. The mother of our athlete is outraged,” he stated.

Recently, the Paulista Federation held rounds 16 and 17 of the São Paulo U-11 and U-12 Championship behind closed doors following a series of episodes of poor behavior by parents of athletes at the games. Among the types of bad attitudes were prejudiced attacks on opposing children. The measure was also taken following a recommendation from the Sports Justice Tribunal (TJD-SP).

Official statement from the Paulista Federation

“The Paulista Football Federation publicly expresses its profound indignation and outrage at yet another act of racism. This time, it occurred in a Paulista U-12 match this past weekend. In the game between Manthiqueira and Corinthians, a player from the home team reported being racially abused. Informed, the refereeing team activated the Paulista Football Anti-Racism Protocol, and the case was referred to the Military Police and the TJD-SP.

The FPF reiterates its repudiation of any and all racist acts and reaffirms that Paulista Football does not tolerate the participation of racists in its competitions. It is even more shocking that, in this case, it is an act against a child who is just playing football. The FPF will remain vigilant and active to ensure that no person, especially children, are targets of crimes like this.”

“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista deeply regrets the incident last Sunday (19) in the match involving its U-12 male football category against Manthiqueira. Corinthians reinforces its repudiation of any discriminatory act and closely monitors the unfolding of events, making itself available to the authorities to collaborate as needed.”
