Corinthians have made Fernando Diniz their plan A to replace Dorival Júnior, who was dismissed on Sunday after defeat to Internacional at Neo Química Arena in the Brasileirão.
According to Globo.com, the board contacted Diniz’s representatives in recent hours and talks are advanced, with the coach, who left Vasco recently, understood to be very interested in taking charge.
At Parque São Jorge there is an expectation of a swift conclusion so the team could have a new head coach in place for Thursday’s Conmebol Libertadores opener against Platense in Argentina.
Diniz’s bold playing style appeals to much of the hierarchy. Internally, there is a belief the current squad has enough quality to compete for another title this season, making his profile a viable fit.
The choice is not unanimous. Figures close to president Osmar Stabile are trying to dissuade him, viewing Diniz as too adventurous for a period of instability.
The negotiations are being handled solely by Stabile and football executive Marcelo Paz.
