According to Globo.com, Corinthians are working to overturn the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva sanction imposed after racist abuse during the 12 April derby at Neo Química Arena. Despite the decision, the club wants Sunday’s 13th-round meeting with Vasco in Itaquera to go ahead with supporters.
The board believes it has 10 days to comply with the punishment. As the Vasco game falls within that window, it does not expect to halt ticket sales or bar fans for this fixture.
On that basis, the sanction would be served on 10 May, when São Paulo visit. The club’s legal department has already appealed to the STJD’s full bench to try to reverse the penalties arising from the derby incidents.
Corinthians have handed police internal security footage from the stand where a racist shout was directed at goalkeeper Carlos Miguel. They also supplied images from the tunnel to the dressing rooms, where a mass brawl involved members of Palmeiras’ delegation.
The team sit in the relegation zone and have not won in the league since 19 February. They consider the backing of their supporters at Neo Química Arena essential in their bid to turn the campaign around.
