Corinthians will formally report racist abuse and crowd violence to Conmebol after their 1-1 Libertadores draw at Independiente Santa Fe in Bogotá on Wednesday. The club said in a statement that it is seeking a thorough investigation and appropriate measures after objects were thrown at players and staff, disrespectful shouts targeted goalkeeper Hugo Souza, and a supporter made a racist gesture.

Tensions escalated at full time near the goal Corinthians defended in the second half. The flashpoint is understood to have followed Hugo Souza’s celebration facing the home end, which led forward Nahuel Bustos to confront him.

A melee broke out as players from both sides converged. Hugo Souza retreated and was shielded by members of the travelling party, including head coach Fernando Diniz.

Santa Fe players, including midfielder Obrian, tried to get close as Corinthians team-mates formed a protective ring around their keeper. He headed for the tunnel amid further missiles thrown from the stands.

After the match, home supporters were seen making racist gestures towards the visiting Corinthians section. Videos on social media captured one supporter doing so, while others aimed insults at the travelling fans.
