Coventry City should reunite with their former striker Callum Wilson this January

Callum Wilson looks likely to leave West Ham United this January, and Premier League-chasing Coventry City should reunite with their academy product this winter to help boost their promotion ambitions.

Coventry City sit top of the league after 26 games, six points clear of Middlesbrough, who sit behind them in the rankings.

The Sky Blues were scintillating in the early stages of the campaign, but just two wins in their eight have seen the Sky Blues stagnate and seen their lead at the summit being slowly chipped away by the chasing pack.

Despite this, they remain comfortably the league's top scorers, but head coach Frank Lampard doesn't appear to be fully content with his options up top.

Patrick Bamford looked set to sign a short-term deal at the CBS Arena in October, before Coventry owner Doug King pulled the plug on any potential deal, as the former Leeds United striker signed for Sheffield United instead.

And recently, the Sky Blues have been linked with loan moves for both former Celtic winger Liel Abada and Crystal Palace forward Romain Esse, with Lampard clearly targeting reinforcements in that area of the pitch.

With the recent news that Callum Wilson, a Coventry academy graduate, looks set to leave West Ham this January, this could present a fairytale return for the 33-year-old forward, who could prove to be the catalyst for Coventry's Premier League dream.

Born in Coventry, Wilson made his professional debut for the Sky Blues all the way back in August 2009 and would enjoy a stellar 2013/14 season in League One with the club, hitting 21 goals and grabbing six assists in 37 third-tier appearances, earning a move to Bournemouth.

Wilson has since gone on to make over 250 Premier League appearances for the likes of Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and now West Ham, scoring just shy of 100 goals in the top flight, as well as earning nine caps for England.

Having been released by Newcastle in the summer, Wilson signed for West Ham on a free transfer to provide another option in attack, but with Graham Potter, the man who signed Wilson, now dismissed, Nuno Espirito Santo has made it clear that the 33-year-old is not part of his plans this campaign.

West Ham have struck deals for both Pablo Felipe from Portuguese side Gil Vicente and Argentine forward Taty Castellanos from Italian side Lazio, as the Hammers look to reinvent their attack to help bolster their survival hopes.

Wilson now looks set to follow Niclas Fullkrug out of the exit door at the London Stadium this January, and Coventry should make a swift move to tempt him back to the city of his birth.

With Brandon Thomas-Asante, Jack Rudoni, and Haji Wright each spending periods of time in the treatment room this season, Lampard has made attacking reinforcements a priority this January, and understandably so.

This season is as good a chance that the Sky Blues have had of earning promotion back to the top flight for only the second time in their entire history, and the first time since 1967.

The belief that that is the case is reflected by the club putting a £200 million price tag on American forward Haji Wright, who had been the subject of a potential switch this January.

With Wright and Ellis Simms being the only two recognised out-and-out strikers in the side, a room for a third would be more than welcome, and Coventry could do a lot worse than Wilson.

Whether the Englishman would be open to dropping to the Championship and taking a wage hit at this stage remains to be seen, but an emotional return to the club where it all started and helping them earn promotion to the Premier League could prove to be too good a prospect to turn down.

It remains to be seen whether there would be mutual interest in striking a deal, but Coventry would be wise to at least test the waters over a potential move, in what could prove to be an incredible switch for all parties.
