Martial Godo has started fantastically at Strasbourg; however, Frank Lampard might not regret missing out on the winger's signature.

Coventry City were heavily interested in winger Martial Godo over the summer, with Frank Lampard looking to add the 22-year-old to his ranks after he was unable to make an impression at Fulham.

Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett reported in the final week of the transfer window that Godo was in search of first-team football at a crucial stage of his development. However, after a move to the CBS Arena didn't materialise, the winger moved to French Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg - currently under the guidance of Liam Rosenior.

Godo had previously spent time in the EFL during a loan spell at Wigan, and a move to Coventry would have made sense. Instead, though, he has started fantastically for Strasbourg.

Whether or not Frank Lampard regrets this is another topic entirely, with his Coventry side firing on all cylinders in the final third during the season's opening months.

Martial Godo has started brilliantly in France

The 22-year-old has had a remarkable rise in his short career so far, as he started in non-league with Dartford and Margate before being picked up by Fulham.

Most of his minutes since have come at U23 level, but he joined Wigan for the 2023/24 season, scoring four goals and registering five assists in 30 League One games.

Godo returned to Fulham last season as part of Marco Silva’s squad, and he made two Premier League appearances for the club.

After a slow opening month at the club, he has since exploded at Strasbourg under Liam Rosenior, as he picked up an assist in a 2-1 win against Slovan Bratislava in the UEFA Conference League - his European debut.

And in the following days, he would go on to shine as Strasbourg rose to third in the Ligue 1 standings with a 5-0 win against Angers. With Rosenior known for his impact with the Blue and White's younger players, Godo looks to be the next in line coming through what has been an excellent system since the ex-Hull boss arrived.

Despite playing just 142 minutes since his debut against Le Havre, Godo has been a menace on the left-hand side, and his two goals over the weekend will do nothing to harm his chances of potentially claiming a starting spot after the culmination of the current international break.

As of now, it seems as if the 22-year-old has made the right move, at the right time for his career.

Frank Lampard won't regret missing out - Coventry are flying

The Sky Blues have continued to rapidly shift through the gears since Lampard's arrival last term, and the play-off semi-final defeat in May has not caused a hangover, with Coventry flying at the top of the Championship.

Alongside a fantastic record of just seven goals conceded - only bettered by the six of Middlesbrough and Stoke - Lampard's men have netted a sensational 27 times across their opening nine second-tier matches.

The closest tallies to this are those of Bristol City and Ipswich, who have both netted 15 times thus far.

The Sky Blues are by far and wide the best attacking team in the division, with striker Haji Wright sitting at the top of the goalscoring charts, with eight second-tier goals. Remarkably, both Brandon Thomas-Asante and Victor Torp also find themselves in the top five, who have both found the back of the net five times.

And the numbers aren't a fluke, with Coventry having registered 322 touches in the opposition box - almost 100 more than Bristol City, who sit second with 233.

Six shots on target per match, 34 big chances, and an expected goals number of 22.4. The fact of the matter is that Coventry create at a volume unlike any other side in the Championship.

Naturally, a player with Godo's potential would have been another asset to add to Lampard's impressive attacking ranks, though it is doubtful that there will be any regrets.

Coventry are flying in the final third, and keeping up this form in the final third would put the club well on track for the Premier League after the Sky Blues have reached the play-offs twice in the last three seasons. Missing out on Godo, then, could be quickly forgotten.
