Coventry City host Derby County tonight, aiming to move closer to a guaranteed Premier League return.
The Sky Blues enjoy a nine-point cushion at the summit of the Championship. Frank Lampard’s side has secured seven victories in their last eight league outings. They boast the division’s most clinical attack with 81 goals so far.
While they lost their last home game against Southampton, Coventry haven’t suffered consecutive home defeats since 2024. A win today would secure a first league double over the Rams since the 2003-04 season.
Derby County arrive at the CBS Arena sitting eighth, just three points adrift of the playoff positions. The Rams found their defensive stride before the international break, recording successive 1-0 wins.
John Eustace’s men have been formidable travellers, winning nine away matches this campaign. One more road victory would mark their highest second-tier away tally since 2014.
However, history is against them. Derby have lost four of their last six visits to Coventry since 2010.
Frank Lampard will assess Joel Latibeaudiere after he played 120 minutes for Jamaica on Tuesday. Luke Woolfenden stands ready to deputise in the backline. Jake Bidwell could also replace Jay Dasilva, who featured heavily for Wales this week.
Positive news arrives as Jack Rudoni and Haji Wright push for returns from injury. However, Brandon Thomas-Asante remains a doubt after missing international duty.
The Rams suffer a significant blow as Sammie Szmodics is ruled out with a head injury. David Ozoh could return to the midfield, allowing Bobby Clark to operate further forward. Carlton Morris is expected to lead the line over Patrick Agyemang.
Notably, Lars-Jørgen Salvesen offers a potent threat from the bench, averaging a goal involvement every 83 minutes.
Coventry are the Championship’s most dominant side, securing 21 points from their last 24 available. Their attack has been relentless, netting 18 goals across their last eight fixtures. Despite a minor stumble against Southampton, their home record of 45 points remains the best in the division.
Derby enter the Midlands derby in strong form after winning four of their last five matches. Successive clean sheets have reignited their playoff push under former Coventry midfielder John Eustace. While they possess the league’s fifth-best away record, they have lost three of their last four road games.
Coventry City Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Rushworth; Van Ewijk, Thomas, Woolfenden, Bidwell; Onyeka, Grimes; Sakamoto, Eccles, Mason-Clark; Simms
Derby County Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): O’Donnell; Ward, Sanderson, Clarke, Murkin; Travis, Ozoh; Brereton Diaz, Clark, Brewster; Morris
The match will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports Plus. Coverage begins ahead of the 20:00 kick-off.
