The Black & Gold have secured eight victories in their last nine games, a feat achieved only once before since their 1996 debut. In the past four wins, the Crew has outscored their opponents by a 14-goal margin, scoring 15 and allowing just one; the highest in team history and the third best in MLS history.
Ten of the last 15 goals were scored at home at Lower.com Field, while the remaining five were netted at Gillette Stadium against the Revs in the only away trip, winning 5-1 after conceding first.
Every player on the team contributed significantly, but the standout factor is the remarkable performance of the Crew's frontline this past month. Christian Ramirez, Diego Rossi, and Cucho Hernandez have combined for 11 goals and nine assists in just the last four matches. Simply astonishing.
It's not like this happened overnight—nope. In fact, they've hit another gear now that Champions Cup is out of their minds. In all competitions, Cucho has been exceptional, with seven goals and five assists in 510 minutes, averaging an impressive 2.1 goals or assists per 90 minutes. Rossi has also shined despite a bumpy start, contributing three goals and five assists in 515 minutes, averaging 1.2 goals or assists per 90 minutes. Ramirez has added four goals and an assist in 446 minutes, averaging 1.0 goals or assists per 90 minutes.
Nancy's fluid attacking style has been pivotal in propelling the team forward and maintaining their MLS Cup aspirations. This dynamic approach not only maximizes offensive opportunities but also enhances the team's ability to adapt and dominate games. The versatility and creativity displayed by the front three—Cucho, Rossi, and Ramirez—underscore their ability to capitalize on various attacking strategies, whether through quick transitions, precise passing, or exploiting defensive vulnerabilities. As the Crew face tough challenges like LAFC this weekend, their cohesive and dynamic offensive play remains their cornerstone for success, keeping their MLS Cup hopes alive and well.
The Columbus attack can exploit opposing teams in countless ways. Defenses need to be wary of runs in behind, long passes from Ramirez, and avoid making any defensive mishaps near this attack, as they are constantly on the lookout for opportunities. The adaptable, fluid soccer system that Nancy has implemented grants this kind of freedom, and it’s effective. The Black & Gold’s recent record is a testament to that, and they don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
The Crew face a massive away trip this weekend against the 2023 MLS Cup runners-up, LAFC, at BMO Field. It's another major test against a team that's also in top form, promising a spectacle for neutrals. Will the goal-fest go on?
