Mundo Deportivo claimed Cristiano Ronaldo had told his agents to offer him to Inter Miami to finish his career alongside Lionel Messi, but the piece ran on 28 December, Spain's April Fool's equivalent.

The report even said he would accept far less than his Al-Nassr wage, reported at more than £3 million a week, and offered comic reasons, from camel races outdrawing his games to a dermatologist favouring Miami’s climate, image concerns on South Beach, a possible film role, and pinching free-kicks and penalties while enjoying Messi’s assists, plus his ties with co-owner David Beckham.

Both stars are nearing the end of their careers. In November Ronaldo said retirement is coming soon, that it will be hard, and that he has prepared for it for years.

Two months earlier Messi suggested he may not play at the 2026 World Cup because of his age, adding that he is taking things day by day.

He has since signed a new Miami deal through the end of the 2028 season, so he is not planning to stop yet.

The giveaway was the byline, Ricardo Tubbs, a fictional character from Miami Vice, confirming the piece was a Día de los Santos Inocentes prank.

Messi is on his off-season after guiding Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup. Ronaldo is likely to be targeting a strong finish to the year as table-topping Al-Nassr visit Al-Ittifaq on Tuesday evening in the Saudi league.
