Flamengo have appointed Leonardo Jardim after dismissing Filipe Luís, and Cruzeiro owner Pedrinho Lourenço declined to discuss the Portuguese’s decision, saying his focus is Sunday’s match.
“Our concern at Cruzeiro today is Sunday’s match, we are focused on delivering a great performance.” He added: “As for Leonardo Jardim, I do not want to comment, it is his right. People go where they think they should. It is his decision and I do not want to interfere,” he told Rádio Cultura.
During his Cruzeiro stint, Jardim had said he would not manage another club in Brazil. At his Flamengo unveiling on Thursday 05, he accepted he had been emotional when making that claim.
He said he had felt settled in Belo Horizonte and believed in a medium to long-term project, but personal and family issues arose and internal ideas diverged from his, so the Cruzeiro chapter ended early. He admitted he had been emotional and even naive, and now wants full focus on Flamengo.
Jardim replaced Fernando Diniz in February 2025 and took charge of 55 matches, recording 25 wins, 18 draws and 12 defeats, a 56% return. He contested four competitions without a trophy, finishing third in the Brasileirão, reaching the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil and the Mineiro, and exiting the Sudamericana in the group stage.
His first match on the Flamengo touchline is scheduled for Sunday 08 against Fluminense at the Maracanã, kick-off 18:00 Brasília time.
