Rangers have confirmed the signing of former Sunderland captain Dan Neil on a free transfer, with the 24-year-old saying he is really excited after completing the move.
He had been linked with Southampton, but Rangers moved quickly to secure his signature. The former England youth international arrives with significant EFL and Premier League experience.
Neil called it a new chapter and said years of Sunderland supporters’ expectations drove him, adding he has heard Rangers carries a similar demand and that this motivates him to give 110 per cent every day.
South Shields-born, he came through Sunderland’s Academy of Light, making 201 senior appearances and scoring 12 goals.
He helped win promotion from League One in 2022, then captained Régis Le Bris’ side through the 2024-25 play-offs to reach the Premier League, wearing the armband in the 2-1 Wembley win over Sheffield United.
He played 47 league games that season, scoring twice, before spending the second half of last term on loan at Ipswich Town, where he made 16 Championship appearances as the Tractor Boys went up at the first attempt.
Rangers manager Derek McInnes said the midfielder is technically assured, strong in possession, energetic and capable of contributing goals, and that his age and experience make him a hungry, ambitious addition.
