Darron Gibson has confirmed Leeds United were the first club to look at him before he went on to win the Premier League with Manchester United. His route into top-level football began with Leeds, well before Old Trafford and the trophies.
“I went to I think Leeds was the first one then Sunderland, Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal, United was actually the last one I came over to see. Yeah.” he told United By Association.
There is no evidence Leeds pursued a deal beyond that initial look. Manchester United, who saw him last, brought him in.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Gibson made 60 United appearances and scored 10 goals, largely as a dependable midfield option. He was not a headline name, but he fitted a system built on consistency.
He collected two Premier League titles, three League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Beyond Old Trafford, he featured for Everton and Sunderland during a respectable top-flight career. In total he made 252 senior appearances, including 94 in the Premier League, scoring five goals at that level. He also won 27 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
