Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is reportedly more likely to stay for another year than leave the club at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has been playing his football at Old Trafford since making the £80 million move from Leicester City in the summer of 2019.

The Englishman has had his severe lows in recent years, but he managed to put his career back on track during his time under Ruben Amorim.

Maguire’s form last season convinced INEOS to activate his automatic renewal clause, pushing back the contract’s deadline until June 2026.

But with the player now running on an expiring deal, the two parties must make a decision on their collaboration in the coming months.

While some sources had tipped Maguire to follow Casemiro to the exit door, BBC journalist Simon Stone argues that the Brazilian’s confirmed departure will only boost the Sheffield native’s chances of remaining at the club, as his vast experience would come in handy in the dressing room.

The source thus reveals ‘positive’ updates on this front, claiming that United are confident about finding a resolution that will allow the defender to linger at Carrington at least for an additional year.

The two parties will certainly have to find a compromise that reduces the player’s salary, as INEOS are keen to trim down the wage bill, and Maguire remains one of the club’s highest earners.

Maguire’s stay would be music to the ears of Michael Carrick, at least if the latter is confirmed in a permanent role.

The 44-year-old immediately entrusted the former Leicester star with a starting role upon his arrival, linking him up with Lisandro Martinez, while relegating the young duo of Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro to the bench.

Carrick’s overall choices have been proven right in his first five matches in charge, with the team collecting 13 out of 15 possible points. Therefore, few would argue against the manager’s decision to rely on Maguire, especially with the latter producing ‘unbelievable’ displays, as Paul Scholes put it.

In fact, the statistics clearly show that Man Utd’s winning percentage is significantly higher with the England international in the starting lineup.

With Matthijs de Ligt edging closer to a return, Carrick will be given a positive selection dilemma, but if he eventually chooses to bench Maguire, he would certainly love to keep his compatriot at Carrington beyond June.
