Itaquaquecetuba (IAC), who play in the Bezinha, São Paulo’s fifth tier, have appointed former Palmeiras goalkeeper Deola as their goalkeeper coach. According to Globo.com, the club confirmed the hire on Thursday.
A 2012 Copa do Brasil winner with Palmeiras, Deola also turned out for Vitória, Fortaleza and Guarani. He retired in 2023 and has worked as a coach since, most recently with Sfera in Santana de Parnaíba, a player development outfit.
In May, he drew attention on LinkedIn after stating he was seeking opportunities as a head coach or assistant. He said his move to IAC was unrelated, adding that it followed an invitation from head coach Carlos Leiria.
Deola explained that his coach at Sfera knew Leiria and, after a conversation between them, the opening arose. Having faced Leiria’s teams in Copinha preparations and the Paulista Sub-20 last year, he said positive references helped pave the way.
IAC are unbeaten group leaders in the Bezinha. They could secure a last-16 place with three rounds to spare on Sunday, when they host Barcelona-SP at 10:00.
