Ajax will be without Steven Berghuis for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter. Manager John Heitinga said at his press conference that the attacker is not fit enough.

It’s not entirely clear what exactly is wrong with Berghuis. It is believed that he may have picked up a knock in last weekend’s match against PEC Zwolle and will now also miss Wednesday’s match against the Nerrazzurri.

“He’s not fit enough, he’s not in the squad. He has some muscle problems. I would have liked to have him in, but he won’t make it through this match,” Heitinga said on Tuesday afternoon. “He brings a certain creativity to his game, so someone else needs to fill that. We all have to try and absorb that.”

Raúl Moro or Oliver Edvardsen will replace Berghuis. Whether Berghuis will make it to PSV remains to be seen.

Ajax opens their Champions League campaign at home against Inter on Wednesday evening. Heitinga is looking forward to it, but also emphasised that Inter are a tough opponent.

“Where do we stand? We’ll see tomorrow. Of all the opponents, I would have preferred this one a bit later. We want to go as far as possible, so we’ll have to be good. We’ll need all our fans for that. We’re playing in the Champions League again; I can see everyone’s joy that it’s finally here.”
