The LaLiga EA Sports match between Elche and Espanyol was halted in minute 80 after the anti-racism protocol was activated, following Omar El Hilali’s allegation of a racist comment by Rafa Mir.
The flashpoint followed a challenge in minute 78. Superdeporte reports that the referee’s report records El Hilali informing Iosu Galech Apezteguía that the Elche forward had told him he had come by boat.
After being alerted, the referee crossed his arms to signal the protocol, then moved to the touchline to brief club delegates while play was paused for several minutes amid clear tension.
Players from both sides gathered in the centre as the situation was assessed. Play restarted once the first stage was completed, involving a public warning and notification to stadium officials.
The report, published about 45 minutes after full-time, also noted that Espanyol’s number 23 made the accusation, though none of the officiating team heard the alleged words on the pitch.
Neither club issued firm comments immediately after the match. The matter may go to the Competition Committee to decide whether to open a case. Any disciplinary action could rely on further evidence, testimony or footage. LaLiga’s anti-racism protocol has three phases, warning, temporary suspension and definitive suspension.
