Benfica face a potential setback as Enzo Barrenechea’s social media posts could bring immediate disciplinary action and place his involvement against Rio Ave in doubt. According to Glorioso 1904, the midfielder has recently returned from injury and the coaching staff are on alert for the trip.
The defensive midfielder is at the centre of a controversy after sharing two stories aimed at Porto. In one, posted more than 11 hours earlier, he used the acronym "HDMP", a Spanish abbreviation for "Filhos de mil P…", and promised a swift reunion. The posts could prompt an inquiry and a punishment that sidelines him.
He did not start the recent meeting with Porto due to physical limitations and began the game as a substitute. The medical and coaching staff had hoped to count on him in the coming fixtures, but this issue now casts doubt on his selection regardless of fitness.
Benfica travel to Rio Ave in the next Liga Portugal Betclic round. With uncertainty over the number five, preparations for the match could be adjusted. The decision of the relevant authorities on his posts is awaited.
This season Barrenechea, valued at 15 million euros, has made 29 appearances for Benfica, 15 in the league, 10 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, one in the Supertaça and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 2,374 minutes, he has scored one goal and provided one assist.
