Estevao Willian has only started a couple of games for Chelsea, but he’s somehow living up to the amazing hype that preceded his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Scoring the winner last night was a memorable moment for him – surely the crowning achievement of his young career so far. He spoke to Chelsea’s official website, through a translator, and showed just how happy he was.

“It’s an amazing feeling to score my first Premier League goal and in such a big game, I’m just so happy. I feel great right now and it’s so good that the manager has so much confidence in me,” Estevao explained.
“When I went on, he told me to just play my own game and to try and make an impact. He told me to try and score or create a goal and thankfully I managed to do that.
“I’m so happy for him and for all the belief that the manager, Enzo Maresca, has in me.”
That trust from Maresca is vitally important. While we’re always keen to see more of Estevao, it’s also important to introduce him slowly. As Willy Caballero said post game, young players can easily be damaged by over exposure.
Estevao is also just not up to the level tactically yet. It’s great to have him to throw on later in games to try and win them when you’re not worried about him pressing or tracking back.
Starting games comes with a whole new set of responsibilities, and it will take him a while to build up to that. But the phenomenal progress and talent we’re seeing already has us so excited for what’s to come.
